EXHIBIT AND DISPLAY POLICY
Purpose: Exhibitions at Omaha Public Library permit the display of unified collections of paintings, prints, sketches, sculpture artifacts, or other objects, for limited periods of time. Exhibits are selected or prepared by library staff on the basis of their aesthetic quality, educational interest, and on their appeal to the community.
Exhibit Areas: The Michael Phipps Gallery is located in the southeast corner of the main floor of W. Dale Clark Library. Other exhibit areas at W. Dale Clark Library include the center of the main floor, and the 4th Floor Administrative Suite. There is limited exhibit area in each Omaha Public Library that varies by location.
Exhibits: Exhibits may be prepared by organizations, institutions or individuals. Such exhibits should not involve the advocacy of a political or moral agenda, except in cases of historical representation. Exhibits may include traveling exhibits selected by the Library and invited exhibits by artists of national, regional, or local interest. Exhibits may also be of materials owned by the Library. Materials may be sold at the artist’s/owner’s discretion. Prices may be posted, and a donation of 10% given to Omaha Public Library Foundation from any sales conducted on Library property.
Schedule: Exhibits are generally expected to be on display for one month. Any change to this schedule must be approved in advance. A schedule of exhibits is maintained by the community outreach manager.
Security: Normal precautions for the security of the exhibit will be exercised by the Library, but ultimate responsibility for the exhibit is that of the artist/owner. The Library is not responsible for damage or theft, and provides no insurance coverage for this purpose.
Installation: Installation is the responsibility of the owner/artist who must provide all necessary tools. The installation must not result in any physical damage to the building, and is subject to approval of the Library.
Approval: Exhibitors must fill out the exhibit application listing the title of work and brief description of the exhibit and/or include an artist statement. Application for exhibits must be made in writing and, if requested by the Library, accompanied by examples of work to be shown. Requests may not be submitted more than 18 months in advance. Exhibit applications for W. Dale Clark Library are reviewed by the community outreach manager. Applications for exhibitions in branch libraries are reviewed by Branch Managers. Because of limited space and availability, not all exhibits can be approved.
Rights: By agreeing to exhibit your collection in the library, the owner/artist agrees to allow Omaha Public Library the right to photograph items and use them for the purposes of promoting the exhibit and the library in general, giving appropriate credit to the owner/artist.
