Celebrate Kwanzaa with Omaha Public Library

Kwanzaa began in 1966 as a holiday to honor African American culture and traditions. The weeklong celebration is observed from December 26 to January 1, and Omaha Public Library will celebrate with activities at Charles B. Washington Branch, 2868 Ames Ave. throughout the week. The following activities are planned:

  • Wednesday, December 26, 6-8:30 p.m. Kwanzaa Celebration, Ceremony & Feast
            6 p.m.: African Culture Connection drumming and dancing
            7 p.m.: Kwanzaa ceremony with storyactor Idu Maduli
            7:30 p.m.: Feast
  • Thursday, December 27, 2-3 p.m. Kwanzaa for kids. Enjoy making a Kwanzaa bracelet symbolizing the seven principles of the holiday.
  • Thursday, December 27, 6-8:30 p.m. Kwanzaa Celebration of Self Determination.
            6 p.m.: Kwanzaa documentary
            7:30 p.m.: Doris Moore from the Center for Holistic Development, Inc., and James
            Beatty from the Great Plains Black History Museum will host a panel discussion for all
            ages on the role of self determination in building our community. Light refreshments will
            be served.
  • Saturday, December 29, 2 p.m. Kwanzaa crafts and stories with Idu Maduli.
