Homework Tutor
Position: Volunteer
Where: Charles Washington Branch
When: Monday & Tuesday, 4:00 - 6:00 pm
Duties Include: Assisting elementary and intermediate school students with
their homework assignments. Help students understand and organize their homework
assignment; guiding students in completing the assignment. With the library
staff, assists students in learning how to use the library for a homework assignment. Encourages
and supports the efforts of students to complete homework in a timely and accurate
fashion.
Qualifications: Experience working with children. Volunteers
who have expertise in mathematics, English and experience in interacting with
ESL students are especially needed. Must
be available after school hours or on Saturdays.
Library Staff Assistant
Position: volunteer
Where: W Dale Clark Library, 3rd floor
When: 4 hours a week with a 6 month committment
Duties include: picking up books from reading areas, separating
magazines and filing old copies in storage boxes, and placing security strips
in the new magazines. Bring
books from the circulation department and place on sorting shelves. Refill
the display shelves and various other small projects as assigned.
Days and times are flexible but we ask for a minimum of 4 hours each week with
a 6 month commitment. Training is provided by library staff.
Spanish-Speaking Volunteer
Position: volunteer
Where: Florence Branch
When: Every Monday from 1:30 – 2:30
Duties: teach basic Spanish to Homeschooled children.
Qualifications Needed:
Must have experience working with children ranging in ages 7 – 10 years
old and have knowledge of basic Spanish.
Docents
Position: volunteer
Estimated Time Involvement: 3 hours per month (on-call basis)
Branch: W. Dale Clark Library
Length of Commitment: One year
Position Summary: Docents are trained guides who will lead library
tours.
Major Responsibilities: Docents will help visitors learn about the
Library's facilities, history, exhibits and programs. This volunteer position may also include helping
host celebrations and special events throughout the library system.
Skills: Docents must have public speaking skills, a desire to learn,
and enjoy interacting with people of all ages. They must also be at least18 years old and willing to
lead tours on an on-call basis for a minimum of one year. Docent qualifications include: enthusiasm
and excellent customer service and communication skills; an outgoing personality, a patient disposition
and flexibility; public speaking experience; ability to interact with people of all ages in small and
large groups; ability to assess expectations and needs of tour groups; ability to memorize a tour script
and learn new information quickly; possess the physical stamina to conduct one-hour tours and navigate
the building.

Position Summary: Assist staff in filing, typing
and organizing government
documents.
Major Responsibilities: Assists staff in withdrawing
documents from Kardex file; filing withdrawn documents and shelving; typing
lists in a set format in Microsoft Word.
Qualifications: High school diploma or GED. Typing
speed is not as important as accuracy. Training will be provided by a staff
member.
Technical Services Volunteer
Position: volunteer
When: Once a week - Monday through Friday, flexible daytime hours (8 – 4 pm)
Location: W. Dale Clark Library, Technical Services Department
Duties: Assist Cataloging Staff by removing plastic wrappings from new media cases. (CDs and DVDs).
Qualifications: Ability to understand and follow verbal instruction; manual dexterity; desire to work in a quiet environment.

When: Once a week - Monday through Friday, morning or afternoon times available (8 – 4 pm)
Location: W. Dale Clark Library, Technical Services Department
Duties: Sort and box donated materials for the Freinds book sale.
Qualifications: Ability to bend, stoop, stand and lift heavy boxes. This position is physically demanding..
